Fly into Paro Airport, where Guru Padmasambhavna, as legend goes, flew in on a winged tiger and alighted at Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery. It was Guru Padmasambhavna who introdused Buddhism to this region, and evidently made inroads into Kublai Khan's China by way of Tibet. This mountain kingdom was founded at the turn of the century by the present king's great-grandfather who put together several city-states which were centred around the 'Dzongs' (fortified monastries). It is at these Dzongs that the many 'Tsechus' (festivals) are celebrated with the unfurling of Thankas and masked dances - all in a village-fair atmosphere. From the old-world capital of Thimpu, worthwhile excursions are the religious centres of Punaka Dzonge and the famous Paro Valley. also worth a trip are the Kyichu and Gasa hot springs. The renowned Manas wildlife sanctuary is the home of the rare golden langur, the giant pied honbill and the Indian flying fox - all seen to advantage on elephant back. Although the official stance is averse to the label of 'The Last Shangri-La' it is, in effect, so.
